Writing/editing
Over the course of his writing career he has interviewed many of his heroes (William Basinski, Stars of the Lid); many more that the majority of society care about (Dylan Moran, Nile Rodgers, Janelle Monae, Sufjan Stevens, Noel Fielding, Peter Dinklage, Amy Schumer, Courtney Love); and a heap who have since been publicly disgraced (Russell Brand, Marilyn Manson, Ariel Pink, former Lord Mayor of Melbourne Robert Doyle and porn star James Deen).
There are a billion more names to add to this pile, including, in alphabetical order: Alan Davies, Anohni and the Johnsons, Belle & Sebastian, Bill Burr, Bloc Party, Bob Saget, Bright Eyes, Caribou, Cat Power, Chopper Read, Chromeo, Common, Courtney Barnett, Deftones, Earth, Wind & Fire, Flying Lotus, Four Tet, Giorgio Moroder, Grimes, Jeff Mills, Jimmy Eat World, John Edward, Jurassic 5, KC and the Sunshine Band, Kool & The Gang, Marc Maron, MGMT, Mogwai, My Chemical Romance, Nicolas Jaar, Phoenix, Reggie Watts, Rick Astley, Russell Peters, Sasha Grey, Stoya and Village People.
Then there’s an avalanche of other artists that you probably half-remember the name of from their heyday but couldn’t care less about now. You know, the ones that Splendour in the Grass always booked for one year before they disappeared into the abyss and went back to bartending? Bands that you’ll now only find in JB Hi-Fi bargain bin like The Temper Trap, Husky or Little Dragon? Yeah, all of them.
Oh, also: Nickelback and Insane Clown Posse once each for kicks. He could only name one song of theirs but they were both nice conversations. But, who cares really. He doesn’t do much of that anymore because he got sick of transcribing before the days of AI and it didn’t pay very well.
He has written for The Guardian, Time Out, triple j, VICE, Resident Advisor and The Big Issue; and worked in a commercial copywriting capacity for the Melbourne International Film Festival, Sydney Festival, Australian College of the Arts, Mushroom Group, National Theatre and National Ballet School.
He was also an editor of Beat Magazine and The Brag back when people actually cared about street press; and has written for many publications when he was younger that he now regrets (read: Murdoch press, CLEO and Penthouse).
These days he is predominately a comedy/arts critic for Australia’s biggest masthead, The Age. You can read some of that here.
